The Red Cross lifeguard certification course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

This course is designed for those who have never been lifeguard certified before or whose lifeguard certification has lapsed.

Classes take place at the locations below.

• Swim Quest (6800 Deer Run Dr., Midlothian, VA 23112)
• Evergreen Recreation Association (1201 Walton Bluff Parkway, Midlothian, VA 23114).

You will be contacted by email about a week before your class with the final location(s) for your session.

Participants must:

• Be at least 15 years of age by the last day of the course.
• Attend the entire class.
• Be able to pass a swimming test consisting of a 300 meter swim, 2 minutes of treading water without using your arms, and a brick rescue drill.

Course Structure:

• E-learning:  We offer the blended learning version of the lifeguard course, which means that participants will have approximately 6 hours of online learning to complete prior to the first session of the course.  The instructor will reach out ahead of the course you have signed up for with instructions on how to access this learning.
• Zoom session: this 3 hour session will take place on the first date of the course (usually a Friday).  You will also receive this log-in information ahead of the course you have signed up for.
• In-person session 1: this session will take place on the second day of the course (usually a Saturday).  It will take place at either Evergreen or SwimQuest.
• In-person session 2:  this session will take place on the final day of the course (usually a Sunday).  It will take place at either Evergeen or SwimQuest.
